The Bible has a lot to say to Christians about money, including
debt. Did you know that over 3000 verses in the Bible (Old and
New Testaments) are related to money? Here are some verses related
to debt. I'll be expanding on them with commentary when I can.
"Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe
taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then
respect; if honor, then honor. Let no debt remain outstanding,
except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves
his fellowman has fulfilled the law." (Romans 13-7,8)
We're supposed to pay what we owe, including taxes. Verse 8 is
NOT a command to never have any debt. This is an admonition to
love one another, and a reminder to pay outstanding debts.
"The rich
rules over the poor, and
the borrower becomes the lender's slave." (Proverbs 22:7 - NASB)
As long as we have debt, we are enslaved to the lender. They rule
over us, because they have power...power to repossess...power to
hurt our credit rating...power to foreclose. Have you ever wondered
how they build so many banks? It's because of all the interest
we pay!
"Do not be a man who strikes hands in pledge or
puts up security for debts; if
you lack the means to pay, your
very bed will be snatched from under you." (Proverbs
22:26,27)
Isn't it interesting that God even addresses the issue of co-signing
loans?
